so many republicans say they are pessimistic about a deal happening in time to avert this fiscal cliff. some say it's for political reasons. what can you tell us? >> it may all be for political reasons. that's no surprise in washington. as you can seen through dealmaking not just on this but things in the past couple of years between the white house and congress, there is almost this rhythm that has evolved. both sides are pointing to the other for an impasse. republicans like senator lindeyy graham just slamming the white house and tim geithner for a plan he laid out on behalf of the administration, laying out about $1.6 trillion in new revenues coupled with only about $400 billion in medicare cuts. listen to what graham said. >> i think we're going over the cliff. it's pretty clear to me they made a political calculation. this offer doesn't remotely deal with entitlement reform in a way to save medicare, medicaid and social security from imminent bankruptcy. the president's plan when it comes to entitlement form is quite frankly a joke. >> so over the weekend the sunday shows, you sa

i'm really encouraged that we can avoid this fiscal cliff for a number of reasons. first of all, there is a growing group of republicans who say we really need to raise revenue, not just talk about raising revenue, but actually increase taxes on the wealthiest 2%. and they're willing to consider those kinds of taxes that the president proposed so that middle-class americans, the 98%, will not see any taxes. and second i'm encouraged because some of the businesses, in fact a growing number of businesses, moderate and constructively, are proposing that the president's plan make sense. but the major developments that really for the republicans to come forward with some of their specifics. and specific terms, and proposals if they say they want to avoid these tax increases. they need to be more specific. on how to do it. >> you keep using the word encourage and i'll read you some other words that have come from lindsey graham. he said it's a joke. it's not serious. and it, you know, you might be encouraged but treasury secretary geithner did not seem all that encouraged

i mean the fiscal cliff is not so rocket sciences. we've got one bill. you can make it more complicated, but certainly, one way to look at it is let's take this one bill that the president talks about. it's passed the senate bi-partisan support. the president says he will sign it. it will give every myrna tax cut on the first $250,000 worth of income. this is a no-brainer. isn't it? >> william -- >> shouldn't it be a no-brainer? >> it puts republicans in a corner who wants to vote against a bill that extends a middle class tax cut? nobody but of course republicans make the argument, well we can't just extend it. we have to extend all of them. with the economy, it isn't fair blah, blah, blah. we have heard this for months. longs longer than months. now that obama won, he has this new leverage. he's got a lot going for him finally, and he has the cojones to put a deal on the table as a starting bid in the negotiations that isn't already caving. this is the first. republicans are acting like we were saying during break that john boehner was flabbergasted by
